Week 12: New Steps

How is perception changed when design shifts into a new paradigm?

Take a graphic design interest that you are familiar with and investigate how the idea can be improved, disrupted or retold through a shift of application.

First steps

For this final project I decided to really stick to something familiar & personal, & to not spend days on end trying to think of something innovative & complex. So I decided to do this on something I’ve been working on with my dad for the past weeks, which coincidentally fitted in with this final brief.

@ the beginning of this quarantine, I noticed my dad every day would make a dish, post pictures of it on his Facebook with its name, & call it quits (occasionally sending along the recipe to anyone asking for it) here are some examples:

After seeing his posts, the exact description of this weeks’ brief had come to my mind: how can we take this interest, improve it, & retell it through a shift of application?

How can it be improved & retold?

Ultimately this was a question of “How can we change these pictures into something more visual & more impactful?” Instead of taking pictures every few minutes, we started just taking short clips of him preparing the dish, so @ first it was just visual, there was no audio, the sound was just the sound made from cutting or moving things around, as seen in that video:

After a few videos like that, we really wanted to bring the videos to life more, so we started including the recipes, more detailed steps, & my dad would talk all of this out so it overall gave it all a more friendly vibe which was also more personal, & that really showed a significant shift of application from just posting a couple pictures. I then started incorporating pictures in the videos too, over him speaking:

Now here is an example of just pictures, & then a whole video:

The same angles from the pictures were used in the video, but adding motion & most importantly audio completely changed the way the message is delivered.

Here is one final example:

How is perception changed when design shifts into a new paradigm?

The fact of changing a visual from pictures to video adds a lot of character to the outcome. It gives more details, more things to see & more things to reflect upon. Doing this resulted in people being more included within the design, as more knowledge was shared. We started doing those videos with the intention of giving people ideas of simples things they can cook @ home for them & their family. We figured it was much more impactful to make an entire video of how the process of each dish came about, so that people could visualise more easily the steps & the over process of outcome. It overall gives the chance to have a bigger look on what is going on, enhancing the perception, & also gives more reach, as it is much easier int this day & age to make something unique with moving images rather than still images, & to then keep an audience captivated & entertained.
